On April 17, 2024, the 2023 Global Hunger Index (GHI) Report was unveiled at the Mamba Point Hotel in Monrovia under the theme “The power of Youth in Shaping Food Systems”. This annual, peer-reviewed report jointly published by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe provides a comprehensive assessment of hunger and malnutrition on both global and national scales.
The event was officially launched by the President of the Republic of Liberia, H.E Joseph N. Boakai, Sr.
In attendance was the German ambassador to Liberia H.E Dr Jakob Haselhuber, dignitaries from the United Nations, Government Ministries, CSOs, International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs), farmers and entrepreneurs, the media, and other key actors in the agricultural and nutrition sectors in Liberia.
In a powerful keynote, His Excellency emphasized the critical role of investing in farmer cooperatives and promoting local food production to diversify food consumption. His words resonated with urgency: “Agriculture is not politics; its production”.
He underlined that Liberia with its abundant land and water resources, has the potential to yield a variety of food. The Presidents’ commitment to collaboration with communities and development partners underscores the importance of collective effort.
